Ariz. authorities probing whether N.H. couple’s slaying is linked to killing in neighboring county

Authorities in Yavapai County, Ariz., say they want to compare ballistics evidence from the slaying of a New Hampshire couple outside of Sedona to evidence obtained after the killing of a sheriff’s deputy in a neighboring county. James F. Johnson of Jaffrey and Carol Raynsford of Nelson, both 62, were found shot to death Friday morning in a station wagon parked at a scenic overlook about 10 miles southwest of Sedona. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said it wanted to compare evidence from that scene to evidence left behind in Anthem, Ariz., in Maricopa County, where the deputy was killed during a burglary investigation. The suspect in the shooting was also killed, the Yavapai sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Natick woman injured by grease fire in her home

A Natick woman was rushed to a Boston hospital with extensive burns today after a grease fire ignited in her kitchen. The Natick Fire Department received a 911 call at 11:53 this morning about fire, which eventually grew into a two-alarm blaze which damaged the single-family home at 1 Birch Road, said Fire Chief James Sheridan.

Jessica Cormier was remembered today as the “best human being’’ just hours before a prosecutor alleged the Everett woman was murdered by a Chelsea man with whom she had an “ongoing relationship.’’ Cormier, 20, was killed by two stab wounds to the heart Tuesday night in the foyer of her home at 83 Pearl St., blows that Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Keeley said were delivered by Clarence Earl Berry, 59, a formerly homeless man.

Fire officials say Lunenburg condo fire proves residential sprinklers save lives

Authorities today pointed to a fire at a Lunenburg condo as proof that residential sprinkler systems can save lives by quickly putting out fires before they grow into infernos. In a joint statement, State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan and Lunenburg Fire Chief Scott Glenny said a single sprinkler head at in a unit at 69 Royal Fern Dr. doused the fire almost before Lunenburg firefighters had left the firehouse.

Man facing second drunk driving charge following fatal crash on Route 24 in Freetown

A Fall River man is facing charges that include motor vehicle homicide after he allegedly drove drunk and caromed his car off the guardrails on Route 24 in Freetown Sunday afternoon, killing one of the passengers in his car. William S. Lucas, 27, was behind the wheel of a 1995 Honda Accord traveling northbound at about 4:15 p.m. when he lost control of the car, slamming into guardrails on both sides of the highway, a total of three times, State Police said. Passenger Jerry Samedy, 24, of Brockton, was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, where he was pronounced dead. State Police said a second passenger in the car, identified as Jerome Moton, 32, was treated and released from the hospital

Police probe shooting death of 11-year-old girl in Merrimack, N.H.

An 11-year-old girl died after being fatally shot in Merrimack, N.H., on Sunday afternoon, but no foul play was involved, police said. Authorities were called to the Woodbury Condominiums off Joppa Road around 3 p.m. Sunday for a report of a child who had been shot. Police said the girl lived at the address where they were called. Captain Michael Dudash said in a statement that the department’s detective division is investigating the shooting.

Murray has written to political supporters telling them that he has been subjected to “false rumors and wild speculation’’ since he crashed his state-owned car last November while driving in excess of 100 miles per hour. “I understand that when a public figure is in any kind of accident people want to know how it happened,’’ Murray wrote. “Unfortunately, false rumors and wild speculation can result even when the details of the matter have been released to the public.’’

Could it actually snow? Storm may bring some flakes to Massachusetts early Thursday

A nor’easter arriving early Thursday morning may drop some snow on interior sections of southern New England, the National Weather Service says. One computer model suggests that there could be several inches of snow across the interior, the service said in a forecast discussion this morning. There is still uncertainty as to the exact track of the storm, and it’s difficult to make forecasts for specific areas, the forecasters said, but “it appears that there is certainly the potential for more snow in the interior than we have been previously advertising.”

Brigham Circle bank is robbed

The Bank of America branch at 1614 Tremont St. was robbed this morning by a man who said he had a bomb with him, Boston police said. Police said the suspect passed a note to a teller at the Brigham Circle bank around 9:46 a.m. and fled. Police said it was unclear whether the man got away with any money. No further information was immediately available.
